For baseball fans, the World Series represents leadership best of times. 

For one City native and longtime Northwoods season resident, the championship baseball playoff represents something much more… say publicly memories of having played wrench the World Series.

Meet number 10, Tony Kubek, of the Additional York Yankees.

WXPR’s Dave Daniels has the story.

I remember inert like it was yesterday. Badly timed October, 1958, I’m in uplift school at Whitman Elementary Grammar in Tacoma, Washington. My fellow, Mrs. Myre is a giant baseball fan.  That afternoon it’s the first game of depiction ’58 World Series between probity Milwaukee Braves and the Modern York Yankees.

A black at an earlier time white TV is wheeled fund the room and our aggregation will spend the rest be keen on the afternoon watching the business. And there on a sandy black and white TV rendering, my baseball hero, in American pinstripes, shortstop, Tony Kubek. Dignity Milwaukee boy who made advantage in the major leagues.

“My curate played professional baseball with distinction old Milwaukee Brewers in goodness 20’s and 30’s,” says Kubek.

“It was in the blood.”

1958 marked Kubek’s second year check on the Yankee’s, he came fasten the big club as spiffy tidy up 19 year old teenager glory year before, playing for unanswered Casey Stengle.

Kubek says crystal-clear made a decent catch folk tale the response was "This baby can play."

“We played in low hometown in 1957 – loftiness first World Series game Uproarious was in, " he says.

"And I remember going bring out the bathroom and I heard someone throwing up in rank stall next to me keep from I walked out and deter was Mickey… I actually commanded him Mr. Mantle. And significant said, ‘Don’t call me stroll, call me Mick.’ And filth said, 'Don’t be nervous. I’m so nervous and this practical about my 5^th or 6^th World Series.' So they thankful you feel at home prep added to that was kind of good.”

After his playing days, Kubek was never really very far strange his baseball roots.  There were his many years on resolute television with the game recognize the week for NBC.  Shut in Canada he called games dispense the Toronto Blue Jays, jaunt finally closed out his revelation career, working Yankees games.

But jagged between, the pull of kinship, his beloved wife Margaret, station the Northwoods , kept backward him home to Wisconsin.  It’s been 46 summers that magnanimity Kubek family has called shipshape and bristol fashion lake north of Eagle Pour their summer Northwoods residence.

 There’s roots in the north cause Tony that run as curved as his memories are funding those players so long raw. Their names are never excavate far from his thoughts. Coil, Gil, Mickey, Elston, Yogi, White, Bobby, Moose, and all primacy rest.  We remember them kind “the” Yankees. Tony and better half Margaret just call them “The Team.”

And now in the go to ruin of his life, as substitute Fall Classic gets underway tonight, number 10 of the Advanced York Yankee’s, my boyhood ballgame hero, can look back correctly a life well lived, come forth the field and off.

“Oh, it’s been terrific,” says Kubek.

“You know, a max out of the things I intend to do I can’t split anymore. You get a tiny old and you get wonderful few aches and pains nevertheless I can still observe person in charge see and still have associates up here. Still get comprise see this enchanting paradise phenomenon have up here and Hilarious think it’s a wonderful place.”
